Distance education serving parents and families throughout the world > Candelaria and Tomás

Carolina lives in Argentina and discovered John Tracy Clinic on an internet chat while looking for guidance about her daughter, Candelaria, who is deaf. The year was 2002 and the family signed up for JTC Parent Distance Education courses by mail and, that next summer, attended the International Spanish Language Summer Session.

When Carolina’s son, Tomás, was also born with hearing loss soon after they returned, Carolina was able to take advantage of all the information and digital possibilities on the expanded JTC website. She even sent JTC staff a photograph of the surgeon who did Tomás’s implant because she wanted the parent educators to know him. Many pictures of the growing family followed.

When the lessons became available online in 2006, Carolina moved seamlessly into using them to support Tomás’s use of his cochlear implant on his path toward spoken language.

Today, Candelaria dances ballet and loves to draw. Tomás is interested in dinosaurs and enjoys school. And Carolina stays connected. She keeps in touch with JTC parent educators through email and photos, browses the JTC website for Chatterbox essays and the latest news, loves watching JTC children on YouTube, and corresponds with other families on JTC’s Spanish blog.

Carolina recently emailed, “Muchas gracias por estar siempre acompañandonos! Aprendimos mucho junto a Uds!!” (Thank you for always being there to accompany us. We learn so much from you.)
